The Layman's Hymn

Foolishly human,
I wished for something I had imagined
An isle of sense upon this sea of nonsense.
And so hapless and desperate was I -
that wish was only to become a prayer.

Am I fatally human?
I expected more, but nonetheless,
I settled for a respectful smile
for there was so much more to savour
than anger's grim crack!

Hoplessly human,
I wade against my own race's ebb,
prejudices, and social vanities.
For beneath this dreary dross looms
something more -

a melody my heart can bring to song.
