The Mad Calling

I've heard the music of a musician
so tortured and pitiful ...
that he tried to drown himself in the Rhine.
The beauty and the poignancy of his melodies
could only have been inspired in ecstasy.
I've read glorious words written by an author
so profoundly possessed by his own art of suffering that
he ended everything meaningful - tragically
The truth his words told seemed to
both embrace and sadden the heart and soul.

I've been held spellbound so many times
by these men and their siren creations ...
that each time I pick up a pen or hum a tune
Something mysteriously wanting within
pines for a place among them.
